The Car
Let’s start at the end, shall we?
This is the car that our replica to run in the 2010 Midnattssolssrallyt will be modelled on….
The 1978 Saab 99 Turbo as raced by Stig Blomqvist featured the following:
- 246 BHP @ 6000 rpm max. 7000 rpm
- Boost pressure max. 1.6 bar
- Tourqe 32,7kpm/5000 rpm
- 4 speed with limited slip differential
- Weight 1100 kg
- 0-100 km/h 6,2 s 0-160km/h 14,5 s Top speed 185 km/h
SAAB entered the 1978 Lombard RAC Rally with a world sensation in the form of the Saab 99 Turbo. The car was one of the very first rally cars with a turbo charged engine – a technology that has since become standard on all WRC cars.
Stig Blomquist drove a black SAAB-works car GWZ477, and Per Eklund drove a white Happy People / P-O Ekman sponsored 99 Turbo CC.
Our goal is to build a replica of the Blomqvist car and have it running in the 2010 Midnattssolsrallyt.
We have already purchased two Saab 99 Turbos and at least one of those will be transformed into a competition car. The first purchase is featured in the video to the right.
The second purchase will most likely be the primary focus of our preparations for the race. It was purchased on August 4th and initial inspections show it to be in good basic order – the perfect platform from which to build our replica competition car.
The approximate timeline for work to be completed is as follows:
- July: Original 99 Turbo CC is bought in Växjö
- August: Rust and body repair, start of engine and gearbox renovation
- September: Guss rollcage to be fitted
- October: Paintjob
- November: Making of striping, sponsors decals etc
- December: Fitting of the interior
- July 2010 ….. on the startingline of Midnattssolsrallyt.
Whilst we have a small number of initial sponsorship arrangements already in place, we do welcome interest from other potential sponsors as well. If you are interested in supporting this fantastic project and event, please contact us using the contact page.
——
There is, of course, a lot remaining to be done with this car before next years rally.
There are a lot of parts we need to complete our build – maybe you can help?! See the table below.
If you can help to provide/source the following parts, please contact us.

Quite a list Jorgen! I will look around for some more US headlights… they are getting hard to find here though, especially the grilles in decent shape..
Wish I could ship my rally car over and run the event with you all, that would be tremendous!

Hi Guys
.. I had this made locally
A couple of things not on your list you do require..
A Steel diff cover to strengthen the rear of the Gearbox case..and is usually fitted with 2 fittings for oil cooler, i have sample for pics and thickness of plate.
A modified side cover..again for strength, i have on my box in rally car (aluminium)
A aircraft quality stainless steel pinion housing..dont even try to use the std ones
Plate around the top shocker mount, both inside the engine bay and inner wheel housing, 1/4 inch plate 4×6 inchs + S&R top shocker brace
The front gearbox mount should be a 5 mount ..NOT one.. 3 for vertical movement and 2 for horizontal movement.. this will stop it jumping out of gear. which it will
Replace the selector dog pin inside the gearbox with a solid pin instead of the roll pin..
oh and finally for now the rear brake calipers are NOT Porsche ones.. i have an ex factory car here.. have matched rear brake pads to the Alfa Guillia one pad hole is larger then the other one
I hope this is of some help
Please send some pictures of the above mentioned.

most of the left calipers here was porsche 914,,that is the only one classed in with rearhandbrake,, frontbrake is ap or std calipers maby 4 pistons calipers similar to volvo 164 with wented disc to,,
if i dont mind wrong alfa romeo and porsche had the same pads
if u want mail me..

Hi Guys
Sorry for delay in replying, i only just noticed it on here not at saabsunited.. Email address is saabservice@gmail.com you can also use this to add in facebook, pics of some of my cars in there
I have been told by quite a few porsche and brake specialists that porsche never had a handbrake caliper !!!
The factory car is the only RHD 8 valve 99EMS 1977 model made and left the factory straight to Australia
