Yesterday, we purchased car #3, a very neat-bodied Saab 99GL, from a town called Örebro.
Not only do they have some old Saabs for sale in Örebro, it’s also notable as being the hometown of Saab tuners, Maptun, as well as the home of one of Saab’s flying Swedes from the 1970s – Stig Blomqvist.
Seeing as how it’s Stig’s own factory car that we’re basing our competition car on, we called in on him at his garage in Örebro. He was kind enough to spare some time for a chat and a photo.
As you heard in the video, Stig was recently named as winner of the 2009 Midnattssolsrallyt. The announcement was a little delayed whilst officials examined and deliberated over the ‘winning’ car. It turns out the Audi Quattro that originally won the event had a 1983 model short-gear box on board, which was a big no-no.
We had car #3 on the trailer, so Stig took a look over it and was gracious enough to stop for a photo.
Stig’s own competition car was on site, too.
This is the Ford Escort RS 1800 that he recently drove to victory in the 2009 Midnattssolsrallyt.
I hope we can see him in a Saab again one day, and soon.
Our thanks to the master and inspiration, Stig Blomqvist, for taking the time to meet with us.

Stig is the man. Typical Swedish reservation — “…if you build a good car…”
He knows that he’s going to have the best technology. We’re in it for the Saabs!
OK I start up this tread.
Stig was in a shining mood when we showed up with the 99. He whished us luck in finding the right gearbox for the car a 7:34 BIG BOX.
If anyone spots one like that please let us know.
I am trying to get in contact with Stig Blomqvist. Can you please give me his details so i can contact him.
Thanks
